The Korean Council conducted a workshop with the teachers from San Francisco from 8am to 4pm on September 15th. The workshop was co-organized by the Education for Social Justice Foundation, Facing History and Ourselves, and Alliance for Preserving the Truth of Sino-Japanese War, on the topic of “The Nanjing Atrocities and “Comfort Women” Teaching World War II in East Asia”.
During the morning session, the participants discussed 1) why war crimes need to be educated, 2) how Japan and established its national identity, and 3) how to educate the historical truth of the Nanjing Massacre.
During the afternoon session, the participants discussed the Japanese military ‘comfort women’ issue through sharing the experiences of teachers who educate the issue, learning about the individual victims, and discussing ways to improve education. Yoon Meehyang, representative of the Korean Council, gave a keynote speech to introduce the victims’ movement and its history.
The Education for Social Justice Foundation presented ways to make use of the educational book “Comfort Women” History & Issues.
Lastly, the participants wrote messages of solidarity to the victims of Japanese military ‘comfort women’ system, visited “Comfort Women” Memorial “Column of Strength” to commemorate the victims, and attended the Truth & Justice: Remembering “Comfort Women" exhibition.
The Korean Council proposed a workshop for teachers from Korea and San Francisco to discuss ways to educate the Japanese military ‘comfort women’ issue.
The Korean Council will continue its works to educate the history to the younger generation and to pass on the movement for justice and remembrance.
