[1446th Wednesday Demonstration for Resolution of the Japanese Military Sexual Slavery Issue Weekly Update]

We stand here again on a Wednesday under a cloudy sky, after another challenging week filled with dealing with the investigation from the prosecutor’s office, responding to the media, and providing support to the survivors.

It has been two months since I first started my position as the Chair of Board without even realizing the gravity of such a title, and this is the eighth Wednesday Demonstration since the human rights activist Lee Yong-soo’s first press conference. With warm encouragement and support from fellow citizens we are able to rise above the difficulties of broken relationships, lost health, and wounded emotions. Deliberations as to how we might renovate the organization and move forward into the future of the movement are gradually taking their constructive course.

I met human rights activist Lee Yong-soo on June 26th.

Though the initial meeting that was planned soon after my inauguration had been cancelled, we finally managed to see and talk to each other in person. Through the meeting, we were able to confirm three tasks at hand. The first of these tasks is to build a tentatively named “Comfort Women” Historical Education Center. She pointed out the necessity to write, inform, and teach the historical truth against the far-rightists (historical revisionists) in Japan and Korea. Second is to plant the seeds for forward-looking solidarity by expanding interactions among youth and young adults in Korea and Japan based on the first project. Third is to conduct Wednesday Demonstrations with other local organizations working with survivors. In this meeting she also expressed interest in participating in the extant local Wednesday Demonstrations with me to show her support.

Yet some concerns still remain.

There still exist those who continue their attempts to come between Lee and the Korean Council and deepen the rift by creating conflicts and exposing old wounds. There still exist those who try to create ruptures among survivors and among survivors’ families and the families of the deceased. They are participating in anti-historical actions to gratify their personal interests. We are still surrounded by those who shamelessly wave the Imperial Japanese Army flag, cry for dissolution of the Korean Council and demolition of the Statues of Peace, deny the history of the “comfort women” system, and condemn its victims. There still exist Korean intellectuals who deny the history of colonialism consisting of forced mobilization, labor exploitation, and sexual exploitation and instead resonate with Japanese extreme rightists, who attempt to accuse human rights activist Lee of being a “liar” and degrade the movement. Their collaboration in such actions hurts and saddens us, especially as they are fellow Korean citizens.

We, nonetheless, will valiantly hold hands and rebuild the foundation for the movement. There is a long road ahead to come up with concrete implementations and we will need to join forces with lots of our fellow citizens to realize the goals we have. We will find a way to navigate through this challenging period by learning from your wisdom, by keeping our ears open, and by holding your hands. We hope to see you accompany us on the journey of this movement.

[1446차 일본군성노예제문제해결을 위한 정기 수요시위 주간보고]

검찰수사 협조, 언론대응, 피해자 지원 사업 등으로 힘겨운 한 주가 또 지나가고, 하늘도 흐린 수요일, 어김없이 이 자리에 섰습니다.

자리의 엄중함을 미처 깨닫지도 못한 채 이사장으로 선지 두 달, 이용수 인권운동가님의 첫 번째 기자회견 후 여덟 번째 수요시위입니다. 사람을 잃고 건강을 잃고 영혼이 털렸지만 시민 여러분들의 따듯한 응원과 격려로 다시 마음이 채워지고 있습니다. 조직쇄신과 운동방향에 대한 깊은 고민이 발전적 방향으로 가닥을 잡고 있습니다.

지난 6월 26일 금요일, 이용수 인권운동가님을 만났습니다.

이사장 취임 직후 약속된 만남이 어긋났지만, 늦게나마 뵙고 이야기를 나눌 수 있었습니다. 세 가지 공통 과제도 확인했습니다. 우선, 가칭 ‘위안부’ 역사교육관 건립입니다. 일본 우익과 한국 극우들에 맞서 역사적 진실을 기록하고 알리고 가르칠 장소가 절실하다고 하셨습니다. 둘째, 이를 기반으로 한일 청년·청소년 교류를 확장해 미래지향적 연대의 씨를 뿌리자는 것입니다. 셋째, 피해자들이 생존해 있는 지역 단체들과 함께 더 가열 차게 수요시위를 진행해 달라는 것입니다. 기왕에 진행되고 있던 지역별 수요시위에 저와 함께 참석해 힘을 실어드리고 싶다는 희망도 피력하셨습니다.

다만 여전히 남는 우려는,

이용수 인권운동가님과 정의연 사이를 파고들며 오해와 갈등을 조장하고, 상처를 헤집고 다시 틈을 벌리려는 자들이 있다는 사실입니다. 개인적 욕망에 눈이 멀어 피해자와 활동가, 피해자와 피해자, 가족과 유족 간 틈새를 벌리며 반역사적 행동에 동참하고 있는 자들이 많다는 사실입니다. 부끄러움 없이 욱일기를 흔들며 갖은 욕설로 정의연 해체, 소녀상 철거를 외치고 ‘위안부’ 역사를 부인하며 피해자를 비난하는 자들이 여전히 우리 옆에 있다는 사실입니다. 강제연행과 강제동원, 노동착취와 성착취의 식민지 역사를 부인하는 한국 지식인들이, 이용수 인권운동가를 ‘거짓말쟁이’로 몰고 운동을 근본적으로 훼손하려는 일본의 극우들과 공명하고 있다는 사실입니다. 이들도 모두 대한민국 국민이라는 사실이 슬프고 아픕니다.

그럼에도 우리는 의연히 다시 손잡고 운동을 다시 반석 위에 세우려 합니다. 구체적인 실현까지는 가야 할 길이 멀고 넘어야 할 산이 많으며 많은 분들의 힘이 필요하겠지만, 여러분들의 지혜를 빌리고 열린 귀로 들으며 함께 손잡고 잘 헤쳐 나가고자 합니다. 부디 가는 길에 동반자가 되어 주시길 부탁드립니다.
