1. 1500th Wednesday Demonstration for Just Resolution of the Japanese Military Sexual Slavery Issue Statement
The longest, saddest, and proudest demonstration in the world has reached its 1500th.
We have gathered for the 1500th time here at Peace Road today, at the site where the most desperate wishes have accumulated, where the strongest hope has echoed in chorus, and where the strongest solidarity in the world has been connected around the globe.
On January 8, 1992, a dozen of staff from the Korean Council and women from member organizations gathered for the first Wednesday Demonstration. Victims joined, students participated, and religious people have joined forces. Member organizations of the Korean Council and solidarity organizations have joined forces to co-host the Wednesday Demonstration amid their intense activism. More and more organizations, schools, student clubs, and groups started hosting the Wednesday Demonstrations. More people shared their solidarity speeches and undertook cultural performances. Victim-survivors met other victim-survivors, and halmonis met youth who shared their common will for a world without war. Numerous citizens around the world have raised their voice together for the same cause regardless of gender, age, religion, race, and nationality. They have continued to call for acknowledgement of war crimes, investigation of the truth, official apology, legal reparation, punishment of perpetrators, education in history textbooks, and commemoration in memorials and archives. As the Wednesday Demonstration surpassed its 100th and 1000th to reach its 1500th, it had become a space of empathy, communications, solidarity, peace, and education of future generations.
We thank the victims for their courage in coming forward and stepping up amid the sufferings, pain, and the layers of time. We also would like to express our gratitude to those who have stood here with us, singing human rights and peace and not yielding to antagonism, conflict, political strife and ideology.
However, the Japanese government still ignores the 1500 shouts and neglects the responsibilities of illegal occupation and responsibility for war crimes. Rather than apologizing and repenting sincerely, it has erased history and put forth money, insulting the victims. The Japanese government has been regressing more and more, disrupting solidarity with survivors of sexual violence, blatantly pressuring the removal of the Statue of Peace, and reversing even the small promises it made.
History denialists continue all kinds of falsities and distortions, attacking the Japanese military sexual slavery victims and the movement for resolution. While citizens for justice have continued to build towards peace, the denialists are threatening for an end to Wednesday Demonstration with language of hate and discrimination. They are defaming the victims, spreading fake news about activists, and turning Peace Road into a horrifying battlefield.
Even today, women’s human rights and life are being threatened not only in armed conflicts but also in everyday life. People are victimized under sexual violence and sexual exploitation, traumatized with horror and anxiety, and suffer under stigmatization. We still live in a world where Japanese military sexual slavery victims cannot even reveal their names publicly.
This is why the same voice should be repeated 1500 times. This is why we should not just stay alive, but live to fulfill the duties of the life given to us.
Redress for victims will be achieved and their human rights will be guaranteed only when the Japanese government acknowledges sexual slavery as grave crimes against humanity and violation of human rights and fulfill its legal responsibilities. When we all surpass colonization, war, militarism, and androcentrism, a new space for peace will open. Only when the waves of love and equality, trust and solidarity cover hatred, discrimination, fear and anger, will a true democratic society come.
We will stand at this site with the power of solidarity like a rock that has persevered through 1500 times.

One, the Japanese Government should officially apologize to the Japanese military sexual slavery victims!
One, the Japanese Government should make legal reparations!

One, the Japanese Government should educate the issue in history textbooks!
One, the Japanese Government should establish memorials and archives!

The Wednesday Demonstration, which started on January 8, 1992 in response to then Japanese Prime Minister Miyazawa’s visit to South Korea, marks its 1500th anniversary on July 14, 2021. The Wednesday Demonstration has since been a space of activism where participants called for human rights and redress for victim-survivors based on the seven demands of admission of war crimes, disclosure of official documents, official apology, legal reparation, punishment of perpetrators, education in history textbooks, and commemoration in memorial monument and archive. Furthermore, the Demonstration has promoted peace and women’s human rights as a space of education.
The Korean Council is hosting the 1500th Wednesday Demonstration in front of the former Japanese Embassy in Seoul on July 14th, 12pm. The Korean Council recruited 1500 Co-organizers who stand in solidarity with the 1500th Wednesday Demonstration to continue the solidarity and wishes of citizens who have joined the Wednesday Demonstrations thus far. 1,552 citizens from 11 countries (South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, U.S., Canada, Germany, France, Australia, New Zealand, UAE / 1,341 individuals, 166 groups, 45 South Korean National Assembly members) had joined as of 10am KST on July 12th.
The Korean Council hosted the 1500th Wednesday Demonstration Essay Contest . The selection results will be announced at the Wednesday Demonstration on July 14th.

📌1. Call for Submissions: The Korean Council 1500th Wednesday Demonstration Essay Contest (~6/30)
The Wednesday demonstration, which started on January 8, 1992 in response to then Japanese Prime Minister Miyazawa’s visit to South Korea, marks its 1500th anniversary on July 14, 2021. The Wednesday demonstration has since been a space of activism where participants called for human rights and redress for victim-survivors based on the seven demands of admission of war crimes, disclosure of official documents, official apology, legal reparation, punishment of perpetrators, education in history textbooks, commemoration in memorial monument and archive. Furthermore, the demonstration has addressed peace and women’s human rights as a space of education. Thanks to everyone who participated in and stood in solidarity with the Wednesday demonstration, we have been able to write collective history of solidarity, peace, and human rights.
The Korean Council is hosting the 1500th Wednesday Demonstration Essay Contest to record the experiences of Wednesday demonstration participants and reflect on the meaning that the Wednesday demonstration hold for each of us. Essays can be written on a topic of your choice, such as your experiences participating in a Wednesday demonstration, what you learned from the Wednesday demonstration, and various stories on the demonstration that you wish to record. We hope to remember the stories of various participants who joined us on Wednesdays at 12pm. We look forward to hearing the voices of students and citizens who have participated in the Wednesday demonstration for just resolution of the Japanese military sexual slavery issue.
The 1500th Wednesday Demonstration Essay Contest
- Topic: Participants are welcome to write on any topic of choice under the main theme of . Sample topics may include your experiences participating in a Wednesday demonstration, what Wednesday demonstrations mean for you, words you want to share with those who attack the Wednesday demonstrations, stories of peace, women’s rights, and solidarity learned from the Wednesday demonstrations, and various other stories about the Wednesday demonstrations.
- Deadline: Wednesday, June 30th, 2021 (11:59pm KST)
- Qualifications: Anyone interested
※ Participants can choose to submit to one of five groups – Elementary school (Korean), Middle School (Korean), High School (Korean), All citizens including university students (Korean), Overseas (English and Japanese submissions) - Awards: 3 per group, total of 15 submissions awarded

📌2. 1500th Wednesday Demonstration Co-Organizers (~7/7) & YouTube Live
The first Wednesday Demonstration was held on January 8, 1992. In the past 29 years, the Japanese military sexual slavery victims and citizens calling for just resolution have gathered in Pyonghwa-ro (Peace Road) and shouted for official apology and legal reparations from the Japanese government for 1500 times. In the meantime, there have been numerous attacks and interruptions by the Japanese government and history revisionists trying to erase the history. In the midst of the Japanese government and politicians’ continued absurd remarks, the 1995 Asian Women’s Fund, the 2015 Korea-Japan Agreement, and the pressure to remove the Berlin Peace Statue in 2020, the victim-survivors and citizens gathered together to condemn, appeal, and shout. As such, the Wednesday Demonstration kept the Peace Road as strong as a rock with a stronger solidarity. We will be stronger. We will be together until we make a peaceful world even beyond 1500 Wednesday Demonstrations. Please join as co-organizers for the 1500th Wednesday Demonstration!
