Statue of Peace 10th Anniversary International Symposium Proposal
Purpose
The Korean Council for Justice and Remembrance for the Issues of Military Sexual Slavery by Japan (Chair of Board Lee, Na-Young, hereinafter the Korean Council) plans to hold the Statue of Peace 10th Anniversary International Symposium on December 10th, the Human Rights Day.
The Statue of Peace (as known as Sonyeosang in Korean) was erected in front of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul on December 14, 2011 to commemorate the 1,000th Wednesday Demonstration, and as of October 2021, 144 statues in Korea and 16 statues (excluding the removed ones) abroad have been established. As part of commemoration, one of 7 demands for resolution of the Japanese military sexual slavery issue, the Statue of Peace aimed to remember the victims who fought for a world without war as agents of history overcoming their traumatic experiences and to continue their legacy. Statue of Peace is now a medium of internal reflection for social change, evoking the reality of women’s violence that continues to occur not only in the past, but also in the present. It is the center of international solidarity that spreads and practices the spirit of peace, democracy, gender justice, and human rights beyond imperialism, war and conflict, masculinity, and racism.
However, conflict and war, violence and discrimination against the marginalized, sexual exploitation and sexual violence against women continue throughout the world. As in the case of the Statue of Peace in Berlin, Germany, which was established in September 2020, the Japanese government and right-wing organizations stage systematic attacks for removal of the Statue of Peace. The expansion and attacks of historical revisionists across the realms of movement and academia also exacerbate. Amidst these challenges the victims pass away without seeing the perpetrator’s sincere apology, investigation of the truth and legal reparation. The need for international solidarity among the Statue of Peace actors became more urgent than ever.
This Statue of Peace 10th Anniversary International Symposium aims to reflect on the establishment of Statue of Peace both in Korea and abroad and diagnose the backlash of globalized historical revisionism, including the attack of Japanese right-wing against the Statue of Peace. Case presentations from Japan, the Philippines, Germany, Australia, and the United States will share the difficulties of local organizations and solidarity methods. In addition, the inauguration ceremony of the Global Statue of Peace Network will proclaim a solidarity network among overseas organizations to share pending issues, collect related data, support local activities, and jointly respond to urgent issues. Therefore, the International Symposium will provide a space for in-depth discussions on the ways how remember the Japanese military sexual slavery issue and continue the victim-survivors’ courage in the post-victim-survivor era.
We ask for your interest and participation for the Statue of Peace to be established as a symbol of postcolonialism, anti-discrimination, democracy, and women’s human rights and peace around the world.
